COLOMBIA FAIRTRADE ORGANIC (FTO) PROFILE

A perfect introduction to the enhanced flavor, fresh and specialty grade coffee has to offer.  Sourced from the Cauca region of Colombia from the all women co-operative Café Femenino. Café Feminino is coffee that stands for women.  A gender-focused program to support and empower women coffee producers worldwide, including many positive cultural changes such as:

  • RECOGNITION FOR THE WORK THEY DO IN THE HOME AND ON THE FARM
  • REDUCTION IN PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND SEXUAL ABUSE
  • INCREASE IN FAMILY INCOMES
  • INCREASE IN MEN PARTICIPATING IN CHILDCARE AND DOMESTIC                        RESPONSIBILITIES
  • INCREASE IN SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AMONG GIRLS

  • It is the claim of many that Cafe Feminino coffee is superior because the women are able to do better work in the production and nurturing of the crop and the hand sorting and processing of the cherries.  We can’t disagree and take great pride in our part of the process in getting this coffee to your cup.

There are about 160 participating women in the Colombia sector of the Café Femenino program, averaging 3.5 acres each. A good number of these women are single heads of household.  Funding from the Café Femenino Foundation has in part allowed many of these women to be able to upgrade their kitchens to healthier standards by installing stoves and chimneys that exhaust smoke to the outside. This has reduced the prevalence of respiratory disease associated with wood smoke and allowed financial independence.
